Established ten years ago, it highlights the link between gum health and overall systemic health, emphasising that maintaining healthy gums is vital throughout one’s lifetime.
The theme for Gum Health Day 2024, "Gums Rock! Keep Them Safe!" is especially geared towards engaging younger audiences. With a fresh approach that includes the use of modern platforms like TikTok, the campaign seeks to make gum health a trending topic, with your help! This initiative aims to educate, but also to foster a healthy preventive routine among the younger generation that is pivotal in reversing the trends of gum-related health issues.
We need support from dental and all health professionals to pass on the message that periodontal disease poses significant public health challenges due to its association with major systemic diseases. Just to name a few: diabetes, heart diseases including myocardial infarction and heart failure, stroke, and chronic conditions like kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The good news is that periodontal disease can be prevented!
Despite its severe implications, gum disease often remains an overlooked aspect of oral health. Gum Health Day serves as a platform to bring this issue to the forefront of public health discourse. The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) encourages everyone to spread the word.
